Medicinal and Magickal Herbalism and Aromatherapy

The Evolution of Medicine

2000 B.C. - Here, eat this root.
1000 C.E. - That root is heathen.  Here, say this prayer.
1850 C.E. - That prayer is superstition.  Here, drink this potion.
1940 C.E. - That potion is snake oil.  Here, swallow this pill.
1985 C.E. - That pill is ineffective.  Here, take this antibiotic.
2000 C.E - That antibiotic is artificial.  Here, eat this root.

Other than the spirituality and love for nature, the various kinds of healing techniques that are acceptable and understood in a nature-based religion are part of what attracted me to the path of the witch. As I have said before, I am more of a green witch (the medicine woman) rather than a mage (the magickal, ceremonial wizard) I tend to be more involved with the "sciences" of the different healing modalities or alternative therapies.

Herbalism and aromatherapy, or more popularly known today as alternative medicine, is just one of these healing modalities that lead to wholeness of mind and body. When mind and body is in good order, it is easier for the spirit to be whole as well. It is funny that, after this generation have gone through all the workings of modern science and made much ado about discrediting the knowledge of our ancestors in herbal medications, there now seems to be a general movement towards wholistic living. We can witness this with the growing acceptance of natural therapies such as herbalism and aromatherapy.

What is even more interesting--though not yet quite as accepted in the mainstream--is the fact the most practitioners of the spiritual paths are conscious not only of the medicinal properties of herbs but also of what is termed as its magickal properties. This is the ability of certain plants or its oils to have an empowering effect on our prayers and/or spells. We use it in the form of incense, anointing oils or as stuffing for charm bags or poppets. Why this is so is something that cannot be easily explained in terms that is acceptable to "logical" persons. That is, unless they can accept reasons such as channeled information or intuition, or some such "new age" explanation. Perhaps one day, we can establish a working logic of these and be able to test these magickal properties with electronic devices (because it is probably just some sort of vibrations and wavelengths and other such terms and hooplas that the scientific community wants to call it). Then it shall be called magick no more, but rather be adopted as a science.

When that time comes we can then smile and say…hey, we knew it all along…

So now, I share with you some of the herbs that I have come to acquaint myself with. The information here are a compilation from my various references. I tried to make it the information as concise yet comprehensive as possible. It includes not only the magickal but, more importantly, the medicinal properties as well. However, let me categorically express, in the interest of safety, that despite my inclinations towards natural medications rather than allopathic (Western) medicine, especially in cases of more serious illnesses, do not to disregard the doctor's advise! In my point of view, herbalism and aromatherapy helps best before very serious illnesses and symptoms have arisen. The best cure is to prevent the illness from getting full blown in the first place. Let us try to live wholly, naturally, and spiritually so that we are always healthy in body, mind and spirit.
